HISTORY

Historically, the conference has been set in early December, allowing attendees and their families to enjoy a trip from the conference venue to Tucson and indulge in some holiday shopping. Moreover, the event initially revolved around socializing, making it an enjoyable experience for couples, with a delightful dinner/dance evening as a highlight of the festivities.

THEN

Previously, the conference boards of directors had all mine managers from local mines as honorary members. The venue has shifted over time, from Doubletree to El Conquistador, and most recently, to the JW Marriott Starr Pass. To highlight Arizona's mining industry strength, SME event partnered with the Mining Foundation of the Southwest and the SME Student Section at the University of Arizona, scheduling their events simultaneously at the same location. This unified approach underscores the region's robust mining sector.
